Proletarskiy District Excursion

Even though there was poor weather, the tour group, armed with umbrellas and curiosity, left ZIL Cultural Center and spent a couple of hours walking around the neighborhood looking at architecture from the 1920-1930s. «Всё об авангарде»: October 6, 2012

October 9, 2012

October 9, 2012: went to Nikolaev’s Student Commune House to take a look at the progress of the reconstruction work. By December, the dormitory wing should be ready to go, currently working on the shower area (being converted into an additional dormitory area), and the study section (interior shots below) will be the last area to undergo reconstruction. Still 2-3 years of work remains.

Happy belated bday Shukhov

Happy belated birthday (159th!) to Vladimir Grigoryevich Shukhov. August 28th marked the beginning of a year commemorating this great engineer. And several news stories came out of it, discussing the fate of Shukhov Tower. Cost of the restoration is being quoted at increasing from 135 to 350 million rubles ($4.2 – 10.9 million). Currently Shukhov Tower is a candidate for UNESCO world heritage status, but if the restoration is not done properly, then it could lose its status.

Man with a Movie Camera

Rainy day in Moscow, why not cuddle up with this must-see film by Dziga Vertov?

Человек с киноаппаратом/Man with a Movie Camera – Дзига Вертов/Dziga Vertov

Movie posters designed by Vladimir and Georgy Stenberg (1929)

“The film has an unabashedly avant-garde style, and emphasizes that film can go anywhere. For instance, the film uses such scenes as superimposing a shot of a cameraman setting up his camera atop a second, mountainous camera, superimposing a cameraman inside a beer glass, filming a woman getting out of bed and getting dressed, even filming a woman giving birth, and the baby being taken away to be bathed.

Vertov was one of the first to be able to find a mid-ground between a narrative media and a database form of media. He shot all the scenes separately, having no intention of making this film into a regular movie with a storyline. Instead, he took all the random clips and put it in a database, which Svilova later edited. The narrative part of this process was her job. She had to go into that random pool of clips that Vertov filmed, edit it, and put it in some kind of order. Vertov’s purpose of all this was to break the mold of a linear film that the world was used to seeing in those days.”
